Spectacularly ringed by the Balkan and Vitosha Mountains, Sofia stands on historical foundations that stretch back thousands of years. The Thracians originally founded a settlement here in the Seventh century BC and from that moment, a series of empires, including the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman, have shaped Sofia, and their legacy remains in the old buildings and ruins scattered around the city. The city centre is an amazing fusion of architectural styles and monuments ranging from Roman, Byzantine, Neo-Baroque, Neo-Rococo, Neo-Renaissance and Neoclassicism and Vienna Secession. Also dominating the city is the neo-classical Stalinist architecture, a legacy of the Soviet Union who ruled the country from 1944 to 1989.
Sofia is a joy to walk through with wide charming cobblestone streets and boulevards, some bordered by leafy parks with modernist sculptures. Museums and Galleries housed in historical buildings are found on every corner and the city's skyline glows from the numerous glittering gold plated domes of its spectacular churches.
Sofia is vibrant old world city moving with the times, re-enforced by the city's motto is, 'Ever growing, never old'.
