The Roman forum, much smaller than the original Agora, incorporated an earlier Hellenistic complex and was built between 19 and 11 BC. It became the commercial and administrative centre of the city until the 19th century. Highlights include the monumental Gate of Athena Archegetis, and the octagonal hydraulic clock tower of Pentelic marble built by the astronomer Andronikos Kyrristes in the 1st century BC. Personifications of the eight winds are carved in relief at the top of each of the sides.
Roman Emperor Hadrian's lavish Library was built in 131 AD in Athens. The library complex consisted of a vast library, a large courtyard with a garden and central pool, mosaics floors, numerous rooms and a facade adorned with Corinthian columns.
