The images in this Gallery are from, the sophisticated and unique island of Hydra which sparkles brightly in the warm blue waters as the undisputed jewel of the Saronic Gulf archipelago. There are also a handful of images from the island of Poros.
This long rocky island, where all cars are banned, has been a favourite haven for artists and intellectuals since the 1960's and visitors arriving at the Hydra town are treated to one of the most stunningly beautiful harbours in Greece.
Shaped like a perfect horseshoe, the bustling and spectacular harbour of Hydra town is filled with colourful bobbing, caiques, fishing, and coastal boats and yachts of the rich and famous. Enclosing the harbour and ascending amphitheatrically from the steep slopes to the turquoise seas of the port are the imposing and distinctive stone mansions that were built in the 17th and 18th centuries for the great Hydriot families by Venetian and Genoese architects.
On the traffic free and charming waterfront the many chic boutiques, arts and crafts shops, cafes and restaurants are teeming with a cosmopolitan crowd, whilst tasselled donkeys (Hydra's best form of transport) wait patiently for their next journey along the labyrinth of twisting cobbled lanes.
Also found on the waterfront is the historical and architecturally impressive 18th century Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary which is one of the 365 churches that Hydra claims to have.
Hydra is ninety minutes from the port of Piraeus.
