Images in this photo gallery are from Kastoria, a picturesque lake town in the Northern Greece region of western Macedonia, 220km from Thessaloniki.
Kastoria (According to legend named after the son of the god Zeus - Kastor), is set idyllically on a hilly wooded peninsula stretching into the tranquil tree fringed Lake Orestiada that is enclosed by imposing mountain peaks.
Kastoria is old historic town; ruins of the city walls of Emperor Justinian built in 535 to keep out invading armies still exist. There are also many narrow cobbled lanes and stately 18th century mansions and Byzantine churches ready to be explored. In fact there are more than 50 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, dating from as far back as the 9th century up to the 19th.
Breathtaking views of the town and lake can be found by taking a drive around the lake and then venturing up to the many pretty villages that are perched on the hillsides surrounding the town. The lake is ideal for sailing and rowing. In fact in the past the Oxford and Cambridge Blues have flexed their famous rowing muscles here.
Another thing to look out for when you visit Kastoria is an image that appears on one of the mountains that surround Kastoria. The locals believe it's the profile of Alexander the great facing the sky!
Surely an act of the Gods!
