Images in this photo gallery are from Corinth, including the Corinth Canal and the ruins of the ancient city which was one of the most influential Greek city states in antiquity. Corinth is situated on the north-eastern part of the Peloponnese in the prefecture of Corinthia.
In the northern tip of the Peloponnese and at the closet point to Athens lies the Corinth Canal. Gateway to the region and completed in 1890, the impressive 6km long and 23 km wide cut was actually first attempted by the Roman emperors Nero and Caligula in order to reduce the travel time and risks of sailing between Greece and Rome.
Nearby the canal are the ruins of Ancient Corinth, , whose favourable position at the crossroads of the lucrative land and sea routes propelled the Greek city into a state of enormous prosperity and influence that was the envy of ancient Mediterranean world.
The Romans razed the city in 146BC. A hundred years later, Julius Caesar rebuilt it as a Roman city and Corinth became the regions prosperous capital.
Successive barbarian invasions and devastating earthquakes have left Ancient Corinth in ruins now, but extensive vestiges of its fascinating past remain, including the forum where Saint Paul preached and the majestic seven columns of 6th century BC Greek Doric Temple of Apollo.
Acrocorinth, the limestone mountain above ancient Corinth started life as the Greek Acropolis and eventually became of one the finest natural fortresses in Europe. Over time Romans, Byzantines, Franks, Venetians and Turks have all occupied it at different stages and contributed to its construction. Its outer circuit walls stretch to 5 kilometres in length and the panoramic views it affords of the surrounding landscape are simply breathtaking.
