Images in this photo gallery are from Nafplio, a delightful seaside old Venetian town and capital of the prefecture of Argolis in the north east of the Peloponnese. From 1829 to 1334, the town was the first capital of liberated Greece.
One of the most attractive and photogenic towns in Greece, Nafplio shines with its bougainvillea-scented maze of medieval paved marble streets, which twist their way through the old town, revealing ottoman fountains, historical churches, small squares and attractively balconied and shuttered old stone houses and gracious Italianate and neoclassic architecture.
The town also has three fortresses. Opposite its attractive palm tree lined harbour lays the 15th century Venetian jewel-like island fort of Bourdzi. And up above the town two imposing Venetian fortresses keep guard above the town with Palamidi citadel, which rises on the summit of outcrop of rock, 215 metres high, providing an amazing view of the surrounding sea and the nearby islands to those who are willing to climb the 1000 steps to the top.
