Rhodes town is a city divided into two. The New town is a modern bustling commercial centre fused with delightful art deco buildings from the 20th century. The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world once guarded the towns harbour. The old town which is the former city of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem is Europe's largest and best preserved medieval city. Declared a UNESCO world heritage listed site in 1988, the old town has 4 km of defensive fortress walls built by the Knights, which contain the remains of Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman buildings, all locked within a maze of narrow and picturesque pebble stoned alleyways.
Rhodes town is on the island of Rhodes which is the largest of the Dodecanese Island group and one of the most popular Greek Islands.
Note: Photos images covering the vast amount of ancient sites, churches, attractive village towns, and landscapes of the Island of Rhodes are located in another Rhodes gallery on this site.
