Known in ancient times as the Island of Helios (the sun god), Rhodes is also one of the Mediterranean's most popular islands and its popularity is due to many elements. Well preserved remnants and legacies of classical Greece, Romans, Arabs, Knights of St John, Ottoman Turks and Italians are found throughout the island. Its landscape is varied with rugged pine clad mountains lying behind long stretches of empty sandy beaches. And the Island is dotted with bustling villages and quiet hamlets where life seems to carry on as it has done for hundreds of years.
