Located at the southern limits of the Cyclades, Santorini is the Mediterranean's and one of world's most spectacular and uniquely beautiful islands. Its caldera, a vast flooded volcanic crater with giant plunging cliffs stands as witness to the 17th century BC catastrophic eruption, the most violent volcanic eruption in human history.
The eruption has been linked to the end of the Minoans and the mythical continent of Atlantis.
Santorin's capital is Fira or Thira, a dazzling whitewashed town that clings to the caldera rim some 260 metres above sea level. Its maze of narrow cobbled stepped whitewashed alleyways are packed with souvenir and jewellery stores, cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs, boutique hotels and numerous orthodox churches.
Picture postcard Oia is a romantic mix of whitewashed and pastel coloured stucco dwellings and blue church domes clinging to the northern end of the caldera rim. It narrow cobble streets are lined with upscale boutiques, art galleries and craft shops.
