Images in this gallery are from medieval hilltop ghost town of Craco located in the region of Basilicate in southern Italy.
Founded around 500 AD, the deserted town of Craco soars scenically above its mesmerizing landscape, overlooking the Cavone river valley. Craco history possibly goes back to the 10th century BC as traces of Mycenaean settlements have been found there.
The town is located in a seismic active area and has suffered from landslips and instability in its history due to it being perched preciously on a slope. The town was completely abandoned by its population in 1991 when a succession of landslides threatened to ruin the town and its people.
