Situated on the south west coast of Sicily in the heart of the Mediterranean is the ancient Magna Graecia (greater Greece) settlement of Selinunte. Founded in the 7th century BC by immigrants from the Greek settlement of Megara Hyblea (Sicily east coast), Selinunte enjoyed centuries of power and glory until being almost destroyed and abandoned after being defeated by the Carthaginians and Hannibal around 409 BC.
