The picture perfect and unspoilt walled hill town of Montalcino in Southern Tuscany is dramatically set high on hill, with scenic panoramas of the vast number of olive groves and vines that produce the Barolo and Brunello red wines that is it famous for. The pleasant town itself is dominated by the triking 14th century Sienese Fortress (Fortezza) also known as Rocca. Its medieval warren of narrow alleys are packed with private gardens and it has a number of wonderful Gothic churches and piazzas that echo whispers from bygone days.
The 12th century abbey church of Sant'Antimo is beautifully set in a typical dreamy Tuscan location, nestled amid ancient olive trees, green pastures and vineyards. One of the finest Romanesque religious buildings in Italy, the church was founded as a Benedictine church and monks continue to live here and chant Latin prayers. The abbey is only 9 kilometres from Montalcino in Southern Tuscany.
