The most famous and popular sight in Umbria is the medieval town Assisi, revered as the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226), who initiated the Franciscan Order and who was canonized in 1228. Enchanting with its winding medieval streets, Assisi has at least 7 churches worth seeing with the 13th-century Basilica di San Francesco, being the absolute highlight with its beautiful and stunning frescoes. It also has a beautifully preserved pronaos with six Corinthian columns of 1st century BC Roman Temple of Minerva.
