The enchanting medieval city of Orvieto dramatically stands flat, on an enormous tufa rock, 315 metres high, dominating the lush fertile valley below it. The city has Etruscan origins and some notable remains exist from that period, however the town is famous for the outstanding beauty of its Cathedral which dominates the skyline and is one of the most impressive in city. The Cathedral or Duomo was built during the years 1290-1320 and its stunning and grandiose façade is a stunning example of decorative Gothic style. The town itself is a maze of tiny piazzas and narrow winding streets waiting to be explored.
Orvieto is popular and easy day trip from Rome, with a train trip taking around 1 hour. There are also a vast number of companies offering tours around the region that includes a stop at Orvieto.
