Apollonia is one of the fives cities founded by the ancient Greeks in Libya that became known as the Pentapolis. The other cities are Cyrene, Teuchira (Tocra), Ptolemais (Tolmeita) and Eusperides (Benghazi).

The gateway to Apollonia is the modern town of Susa which was founded in 1897 as a colony of Moslem refugees from the Greek island of Crete.
