The ancient city of Aspendos was founded by Greek colonists from Argos in the Peloponnese. Situated on Eurymedon River, it was an important and prosperous river trading port dealing in salt, oil, and wool and during the 4th and 5th centuries BC it begun to mint its own coins. It was at times occupied by the Persians and Alexander the great. In 190 BC it became under the control of the Roman Empire. The golden age of the city was between the 2nd and 3rd centuries and most of the archaeological remains seen today are from that period.
Highlight:
The ancient Roman theatre, built during the reign of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180). Considered the best preserved Roman theatre of the ancient world, the theatre has a monumental two storey stage building and its semi-circular cavea has 40 rows of seats that accommodated 12000 people.
