The extraordinary spectacular rock formations and eroded volcanic rock tuff landscape of Cappadocia was formed millions of years ago, the collective work of lava spluttering volcanoes eroded over time by wind and water. The region is famous for its basalt capped fairy chimneys, natural rock formations in various shapes, some which have been excavated and hollowed out and converted into houses, hotels, chapels, frescoed churches and monasteries. The frescoed churches form one of the most important collections of early Christian and Byzantine art in the world.
