Hierapolis was founded as a Hellenistic thermal spa city in 190 BC by Eumenes II, King of Pergamum. The ancient city passed into the hands of the Romans in 133 AD. In 60 AD a devastating earthquake destroyed the city. It was completely rebuilt in Roman style with the financial support of the emperor Nero. The city grew and prospered especially during the second and third centuries AD. Most of the archaeological monuments at Hierapolis date from this period.
