The well preserved ancient city of Perge was founded sometime after the Trojan War by Greek colonists originating from the Peloponnese in Greece. The city had a port of the Kestros River which allowed it to trade and grow. Very little is known of the city until the Hellenistic period in which it was under the control of Alexander the Great. It prospered during the Hellenistic period and from 133 BC was under the control of the Roman Empire. It flourished greatly under the Roman rule and into the early Byzantine period until it was abandoned in the 7th century AD. Most of the archaeological remains seen today are from the Roman period.
Notable structures:
The stadium: One of the best preserved in Turkey, the stadium has stone seating on its east, north and west sides, with the open southern side originally having a monumental stadium entrance. The stadium had the capacity to seat 12000 spectators.
The long broad marble paved colonnaded street, the main thoroughfare of the ancient city. The street extended for 300 metres from the Hellenistic gate to the monumental fountain at the base of the acropolis. The street was lined with shops on either side and in its centre is a water channel that ran its entire length and helped cool the city.
